Private jet range and aircraft finder
Tell us the journey. We show the jets that can fly it, non-stop or with a fuel stop.
Why some aircraft are not listed
Indicative, not a flight plan. We add 5% to the great-circle distance for airways, up to 7% for headwinds flying west and extra where flights avoid closed airspace, and plan on published range less 10%. Winds, weight, runways and reserves decide the flight on the day, and we confirm every aircraft before you book.
How private jet range is calculated
Published range is a best case: still air, a light load and the legal fuel reserves. For most business jets that means enough to miss the approach, hold for 30 minutes and divert to an alternate. Real flights meet winds, follow airways and often carry more, so the finder adjusts in four steps.
The straight line
The great-circle distance between the two airports. A city stands for its main business airport, such as Farnborough for London.
As flown
Plus 5% for airways, and more where flights avoid closed airspace, such as Russia between Europe and north Asia.
Into the wind
Plus up to 7% on westbound legs in the mid-latitudes, where the jet streams blow. Eastbound legs get no tailwind credit.
Planned range
Published range less 10%, and less again for a full cabin. Within it, non-stop. Within the published figure, non-stop on a good day. Beyond that, one fuel stop.
Private jet range by category
Range grows with cabin size. The published figures below come from our aircraft pages.
| Category | Seats | Published range | Typical mission |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light jets | 6 to 7 | 2,010 to 2,040 nm | City pairs of an hour to three hours with a small party and weekend luggage. For example Phenom 300, Learjet 55 |
| Midsize jets | 7 to 8 | 1,750 to 2,700 nm | Three to four hours with a stand-up cabin and an enclosed lavatory. For example Citation XLS+, Citation Latitude |
| Super-midsize jets | 8 to 9 | 3,200 to 4,018 nm | Coast to coast non-stop, and the Atlantic with a fuel stop or on a favourable day. For example Challenger 350, Citation X+, Praetor 600 |
| Heavy jets | 10 to 14 | 3,900 to 5,950 nm | London to New York or Dubai non-stop, with a separate rest area at the back. For example Legacy 650, Challenger 605, Falcon 2000LXS |
| Ultra-long-range jets | 13 to 16 | 6,450 to 7,750 nm | Twelve to fifteen hours in one sitting, with a bed and, on the newest types, a shower. For example Falcon 8X, Global 6500, G650 |
| VIP airliners | 19 to 50+ | 4,600 to 11,100 nm | A delegation, a team or a family travelling together, with a stateroom and a dining table. For example Lineage 1000, BBJ MAX 7, ACJ319neo |

Which private jets can fly transatlantic?
London to New York is about 2,990 nm, but the answer depends on direction. Flying west into the jet stream, the finder allows about 3,330 nm. Flying east, 3,130 nm. With six passengers:
- Non-stop both ways
- Praetor 600, Legacy 650, Challenger 605, Falcon 2000LXS, Falcon 7X, Falcon 8X, Global 6500, G650, Global 7500, G700
- Non-stop eastbound on a good day
- Challenger 350, Citation X+. They usually stop for fuel flying west.
- With one fuel stop
- Citation Latitude
- Not practical
- Light jets, which need two or three stops.
When is a fuel stop required?
When the journey as flown is longer than the aircraft's planned range. The finder then picks an airport on the way with a runway long enough for a fully fuelled take-off, favouring the usual technical stops. A Challenger 350 flying west from London to New York, for example, stops at St. John's and takes about 8h 50m in all.
About an hour on the ground
The finder allows 50 minutes. Passengers usually stay aboard while the aircraft is refuelled.
The usual stops
Gander, Goose Bay, Shannon and Keflavík on the North Atlantic, Santa Maria and Lajes in the Azores, Anchorage on the Pacific, Bahrain and Muscat towards Asia.
When a stop is worth it
When a smaller aircraft fits the party and costs less per hour, or when the destination runway is too short for a heavier jet.
What can reduce a jet's practical range?
The same aircraft can fly a route non-stop one day and need a stop the next. The operator weighs these on the day, roughly in this order.
- Winds The biggest factor. A 100-knot headwind for seven hours adds about 700 nm. Westbound Atlantic and Pacific crossings feel it most, especially in winter.
- Payload Passengers, bags and catering. Published ranges assume four to eight passengers. Weight in the cabin is fuel the aircraft cannot carry.
- Runways Length, altitude and heat. A short runway, a high airport or a hot day limits take-off weight, so the aircraft leaves with less fuel. Aspen in summer and London City are examples.
- Reserves and weather Fuel that must remain on landing. A distant alternate, fog forecast at the destination, icing or storms all take fuel that cannot be spent on distance.
- Routing and airports Airways, closed airspace and slots. Flights between Europe and north Asia avoid Russian airspace. Slots, curfews and noise rules can force a longer route or a different airport.
- The aircraft Two of the same type can differ. A heavier interior, an older engine standard or extra fuel tanks change the real figure.
Popular routes and the aircraft that fly them
Planned for six passengers: the smallest aircraft that flies each route non-stop and, where there is one, a smaller aircraft that makes it with a fuel stop.
Distances between each city's main business airport. Times are indicative and include taxi and, with a fuel stop, the time on the ground.

Frequently asked questions
How far can a private jet fly?
It depends on the cabin class. Published ranges on the aircraft we charter are 2,010 to 2,040 nm for light jets, 1,750 to 2,700 nm for midsize, 3,200 to 4,018 nm for super-midsize, 3,900 to 5,950 nm for heavy jets, 6,450 to 7,750 nm for ultra-long-range jets and 4,600 to 11,100 nm for VIP airliners. Those figures assume a light load and still air, so the finder plans on 90% of them.
Which private jets can fly London to New York non-stop?
With six passengers, these fly it non-stop in both directions: Praetor 600, Legacy 650, Challenger 605, Falcon 2000LXS, Falcon 7X, Falcon 8X, Global 6500, G650, Global 7500 and G700. The Challenger 350 and Citation X+ usually manage it eastbound only, with the wind behind them.
Can a light jet cross the Atlantic?
Not in one hop. Light jets have about 2,040 nm of published range, so the crossing via Iceland and Greenland takes two or three stops. For four to six people, a super-midsize jet with one fuel stop is the practical choice.
How accurate is the range calculator?
It gives a shortlist, not a flight plan. It adds allowances for airways, headwinds and closed airspace, and plans on 90% of each aircraft's published range. We confirm every option with the operator's performance data and the forecast before you book.
Why do results differ eastbound and westbound?
The jet streams blow from west to east, often above 100 knots in winter. Flying west into them costs hundreds of miles of range, so a jet that flies New York to London non-stop may need a fuel stop on the way back.
How long does a fuel stop take?
About 50 minutes to an hour, at an airport chosen for quick handling such as Gander, Shannon or Keflavík. Passengers usually stay aboard. The finder includes the stop in the journey time.
Does the number of passengers change the range?
Yes. Published ranges assume four to eight passengers. The finder reduces planned range as the cabin fills, by up to 8% on a full aircraft unless the manufacturer publishes its own figure.
Can I book the aircraft the finder recommends?
The finder names aircraft types. We then find an aircraft of that type, or an equivalent, near your departure airport and send priced options with photographs. Request live pricing from any result and your choices come with it.
