Why charter a Praetor 600

The Praetor 600 is the longest-range super-midsize, chosen when four to six people want to cross the Atlantic or fly Europe to the Gulf without a stop, at super-midsize rates.

Who it suits

Four to six passengers on long legs such as New York to London, London to Dubai or Los Angeles to Hawaii, and anyone who dislikes turbulence. It is the only super-midsize with full fly-by-wire, which actively damps rough air, so the ride is steadier than on older types.

Against its rivals

It is Embraer's Legacy 500 with belly tanks and stronger engines, as tall as a Challenger 350 but 4 in narrower. Pick the Challenger for width and far more aircraft to choose from, the Citation Latitude for shorter trips at a lower price, and a Legacy 650 when a full cabin must cross the Atlantic.

Where it falls short

Far fewer Praetor 600s are on charter certificates than Challenger 350s, so the nearest may be further away and one-way offers are rarer. The transatlantic range is a light-load figure. With eight aboard against a midwinter jet stream, London to New York can still need a stop, and we plan for it.

Inside the Praetor 600

The usual charter layout is a double club of eight, sometimes with a divan in place of one pair. The seats track, swivel and recline, and on the 600E Embraer added a lounge position and a quicker way to turn a pair into a bed. The forward galley is large enough for hot catering on an intercontinental leg.

Six feet on a flat floor the length of the cabin.

02

Seating

Eight in a double club in most charter aircraft; Embraer certifies up to twelve.

03

Facing seats extend into beds on most aircraft, so up to four can lie flat on an overnight crossing.

04

Baggage

155 cu ft including cabin stowage, the most in the super-midsize class by Embraer's figures.

05

Cabin air

5,800 ft cabin altitude at a cruising altitude of 45,000 ft.

Ride

Full fly-by-wire with active turbulence reduction, unique in the super-midsize class.

Praetor 600 range in practice

Embraer's 4,018 nm assumes four passengers and generous reserves. With eight aboard and their luggage, plan on about 3,400 to 3,600 nm, seven and a half to eight hours. That makes New York to London a normal eastbound non-stop, London to Dubai non-stop on most days, and London to New York non-stop with a moderate load outside the worst of winter.

The 4,717 ft take-off distance at maximum weight is short for this range, and steep-approach approval opens a few constrained airports to operators cleared for them. At Aspen or in summer heat, the operator may limit fuel or passengers.

  1. Non-stop London to Geneva, about 1 hour 25 A short hop, often the first leg of a longer trip.
  2. Non-stop New York to Los Angeles, about 5 hours 45 With a full cabin in either direction.
  3. Usually non-stop London to Dubai, about 6 hours 45 Within range with six to eight on most days.
  4. Usually non-stop New York to London, about 6 hours 45 Eastbound with the jet stream behind it.
  5. Usually non-stop London to New York, about 7 hours 45 With four to six aboard; a full cabin in midwinter may need a stop in Canada.

Praetor 600 charter cost

The Praetor 600 prices a little above a Challenger 350 on the same leg. Across the Atlantic it can undercut a heavy jet, because it crosses without the stop a Challenger 350 usually needs and costs less an hour than a Legacy 650 or Challenger 605. With fewer in service, watch positioning: one based at Farnborough or Teterboro is often the best value on the Atlantic; one flying in from elsewhere may not be.

As a guide, super-midsize jets charter at about $6,500 to $9,000 an hour for the aircraft, crew and fuel. Positioning, airport charges, overnight costs and the season are added for the trip, and the quote is one figure in writing.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Praetor 600 fly from London to New York non-stop?

Often, yes, with four to six passengers. Westbound against a midwinter jet stream with a full cabin, a stop in Canada may still be needed, and we tell you before you book rather than on the day. Eastbound from New York it is a normal non-stop.

What is the range of the Praetor 600?

Embraer publishes 4,018 nm with four passengers and NBAA IFR reserves, the longest in the super-midsize class. With eight aboard, plan on about seven and a half to eight hours of flying.

How many passengers does a Praetor 600 seat?

Eight in the usual double-club layout, sometimes nine with a divan. Embraer certifies up to twelve passengers, which no charter layout we would recommend uses.

What is fly-by-wire and why does it matter on the Praetor 600?

The pilots' controls send signals to computers rather than moving the control surfaces directly. On the Praetor 600 the system also counters turbulence as it happens, so the ride in rough air is steadier than in conventionally controlled jets of its size.

How much luggage fits in a Praetor 600?

Embraer publishes 155 cu ft of baggage and stowage in total, the most in its class. That is a suitcase and a soft bag each for eight with room for golf bags or skis.

Is the Praetor 600 the same as the Legacy 500?

It is developed from it: the same fuselage and cabin with extra fuel in the belly, more powerful engines and larger winglets. The result is roughly 900 nm more range than the Legacy 500.
