The light jet most operators reach for first: six seats, an enclosed lavatory and an aft hold that swallows golf bags on trips of up to four hours.

Light jet · Embraer
The Phenom 300 is the first light jet to propose for four to six people on a one- to three-hour leg, and the easiest to find on either side of the Atlantic.
Small parties with real luggage on short sectors. The 66 cu ft aft hold takes golf bags and skis in soft cases, where most light jets fill up after a few carry-ons. It is quick too, often landing a few minutes ahead of a midsize jet on the same leg.
The older, scarcer Learjet 55 has more headroom but a smaller hold and needs far more runway. Step up to a Citation XLS+ when the party passes six or the leg three and a half hours, for a little more, or to a Citation Latitude for a six-foot cabin, for noticeably more.
The cabin is 4 ft 11 in high, so you stoop to move about, and the seventh and eighth seats are a side-facing seat and the belted lavatory, fine for short legs. It does not cross the Atlantic, and with every seat full against a winter headwind even New York to Dallas needs careful planning.
Published figures for the type. Seating, beds and connectivity vary with each aircraft's layout and operator, and we confirm them for the actual aircraft before you book.

Range as published: Phenom 300E with five occupants at 200 lb each, long-range cruise, ISA en route and NBAA IFR reserves with a 100 nm alternate. On the day it depends on passengers and luggage, winds, the airports, temperature and the reserves the operator carries.

A typical charter layout has a club of four, a fifth seat opposite the door and a side-facing seat or divan, with a refreshment centre forward and the lavatory aft behind a solid door. The windows are the largest in the light category. The 300E, built from 2018, brought a new interior; many charter aircraft are now 300Es, and we tell you which version you are offered.
Six comfortable seats in most charter layouts, with a seventh on the side-facing seat or the belted lavatory for short legs.
An external aft hold of 66 cu ft plus a nose compartment and cabin stowage, 84 cu ft in all. Soft bags make the most of it.
Enclosed at the rear of the cabin, with a door rather than a curtain; on many aircraft it is externally serviced.
Pressurised to a maximum cabin altitude of 6,600 ft, the lowest in the light-jet class.
A refreshment centre rather than a full galley: drinks, snacks, and catering that comes aboard ready to serve.
Where fitted, air-to-ground Wi-Fi that works over the US and Canada. Over Europe many aircraft carry none, so plan the flight as quiet time.
Embraer publishes 2,010 nm for the 300E with five occupants. With six passengers, luggage, a headwind and operator reserves, plan on 1,600 to 1,800 nm, three and a half to four hours. That covers Western Europe from London and most of the US East Coast from New York, but not London to the Canaries or New York to Los Angeles without a stop.
Runways are its strength. A published take-off distance of 3,209 ft gets it into short strips such as Hawthorne and into Aspen, though on a warm summer afternoon the payload out of Aspen drops and the flight home may need a stop.
Trips this aircraft flies well, each with its own page: the airports at both ends, flight times and indicative prices by cabin.
A Phenom 300 is usually the least expensive jet for six people with real luggage. It prices above a Citation CJ3 and below a midsize jet, and under two hours the gap to a Citation XLS+ is often small. So many are based in the US north-east, Florida, California and around London that one is usually close by; from a smaller city, expect an empty positioning leg.
As a guide, light jets charter at about $3,500 to $5,500 an hour for the aircraft, crew and fuel. Positioning, airport charges, overnight costs and the season are added for the trip, and the quote is one figure in writing.
When the Phenom 300 is not available on your dates, or the trip asks for something slightly different, these are the aircraft we would put beside it.

Embraer publishes 84 cu ft in total, of which 66 cu ft is the external aft hold and the rest the nose compartment and cabin stowage. In practice six passengers can bring a medium suitcase and a soft bag each, and the aft hold usually takes golf bags or skis in soft cases. Hard-sided cases waste space, so tell us about unusual items before we confirm the aircraft.
Six in comfort in most charter layouts. Some aircraft carry a seventh on a side-facing seat or the belted lavatory, which is acceptable for a short hop. Embraer certifies up to nine passengers with two pilots, but no charter layout we would recommend uses them all.
Not as a charter. Its published range is about 2,000 nm, so a crossing would mean stops in Canada, Greenland and Iceland, which only makes sense for a delivery flight. For London to New York we would propose a heavy jet non-stop or a super-midsize with a fuel stop.
Embraer publishes 2,010 nm for the 300E with five occupants and standard reserves. With six passengers, luggage and winds, plan on three and a half to four hours of flying, which reaches Geneva, Nice or Ibiza from London and Miami or Nassau from New York.
It is certified to be flown by one pilot, and many privately owned aircraft are. Commercial charter operators fly it with two pilots, and every aircraft we propose for charter is crewed that way.
No. The cabin is 4 ft 11 in high, so you stoop to move to the lavatory. If standing room matters, the Citation XLS+ has a 5 ft 8 in aisle and the Citation Latitude a full six feet.
Many US aircraft carry air-to-ground Wi-Fi that works over the US and Canada only; many European aircraft have none. We confirm what the actual aircraft carries before you book.
