Miami to Nassau in under an hour

Opa-locka to Nassau is 185 miles across the Florida Straits, about fifty minutes in a light jet. Miami International, Fort Lauderdale Executive and Miami Executive are within a few miles of the same distance, so the departure airport is chosen by where you start, not by the flight.

Nassau's two private terminals, Odyssey Aviation and JET Nassau, are open around the clock with Bahamian customs on site. The handler files the declarations before you leave, so arrival is a passport check in the lounge, and Paradise Island, Baha Mar and Lyford Cay are fifteen to twenty-five minutes by car.

The way home is where private flying differs from the airlines: US preclearance at Nassau is for airline passengers only. Each leg's formalities are set out below.

Which Miami airport to leave from is set out in our guide to the private jet airports in Miami: FBOs, customs and curfews, side by side.

Customs and documents on a private flight to Nassau and back

Leaving Miami: there is no US exit check at the FBO. The crew files the passenger manifest with US Customs and Border Protection before departure, so we need each passenger's passport details the day before. Everyone needs a passport valid for the trip, and anyone who is not a US citizen needs whatever visa or ESTA lets them back into the United States.

Arriving in Nassau: Bahamian customs and immigration clear you inside the private terminal. The handler files the aircraft's declaration and an immigration card for each passenger in advance, so arrival is a passport check. Americans, Canadians and Britons need no visa; we confirm for other nationalities. A dog needs a Bahamian import permit applied for before the trip.

Leaving the Bahamas: the departure tax for each passenger and the customs charges for the aircraft are paid through the handler and listed in the quote. There is no US preclearance for private flights, at Nassau or anywhere else in the Bahamas.

Arriving back in Florida: the aircraft lands first at an airport with US customs. The crew requests permission to land and files the manifest before leaving the Bahamas, and US Customs and Border Protection clears you at the FBO or the airport's customs building, usually in minutes. Each airport keeps its own customs hours, listed in the pairing table, so we time the return to them.

Miami to Exuma, Eleuthera and the Abacos

Most of the out islands are an hour or less from Miami, and the main ones are airports of entry, so you can fly straight there without stopping in Nassau. Exuma International has a 7,000 ft runway that takes large cabins, for Great Exuma and the Exuma Cays. North Eleuthera, 6,019 ft, puts Harbour Island ten minutes away by water taxi. Marsh Harbour and Treasure Cay serve the Abacos, and Bimini is twenty-five minutes from Opa-locka.

The smallest strips, Staniel Cay among them, take turboprops in daylight only. For those we propose a King Air or a Pilatus PC-12 and quote it alongside the jet.

What the flight costs

The prices below are indicative one-way estimates for the whole aircraft, not per seat, from Opa-locka to Nassau. They include the flight, the crew and the fuel for an aircraft that is already in South Florida.

They do not include landing and handling fees, the Bahamas customs charges for the aircraft, the Bahamas departure tax for each passenger, overnight parking in Nassau, or the crew's hotel if the aircraft waits. Those depend on the date, the aircraft and the length of the stay, so the written quote lists each one and gives a single total before you commit.

Most operators charge a minimum of two flying hours a day, which is why a fifty-minute flight costs more than its share of the hourly rate. For a stay of a few days, the aircraft usually flies home empty and comes back to collect you; we quote that against keeping it in Nassau.

The hourly rate for each cabin, and what moves a quote up or down, are in our guide to private jet charter costs.

Aircraft for a fifty-minute crossing

A flight this short suits any cabin, so the choice comes down to the party, the luggage and where you land. A light jet takes four to six with a week's bags into Nassau, Exuma or Eleuthera. A midsize or super-midsize cabin suits a family with dive gear or a longer stay; a heavy jet suits a larger party heading to Lyford Cay or Albany.

Aircraft pages for this route: Embraer Phenom 300, Bombardier Challenger 350.

When the Bahamas fills up

The Bahamas season runs from November to April, with the holidays and the American school breaks the busiest weeks.

  1. December to January Christmas and New Year The busiest fortnight, with Nassau parking and out-island slots booked a month ahead.
  2. February Presidents' Day and half term A short, sharp peak for family travel from the north-east.
  3. March Spring break Three weeks of steady traffic from the East Coast; light jets are the scarce resource.
  4. Easter The spring holidays The last big week of the season before the islands quieten for summer.
  5. June to November Hurricane season Quiet, cheaper and mostly fine, but plans should stay flexible.

The Bahamas to Miami

The return leaves Nassau, Exuma or Eleuthera and lands at Opa-locka, Miami International, Miami Executive or Fort Lauderdale Executive in under an hour. US customs is cleared at the FBO on arrival, so we choose the airport whose customs is open when you want to land: Miami International around the clock, Opa-locka until midnight.

On the Sunday after New Year and at the end of spring break, the Florida customs desks are at their busiest, so we book the return when we book the outbound.

How do customs work on a private flight to the Bahamas and back?

Outbound, the crew files the passenger list with US customs and there is no exit check; Bahamian customs and immigration clear you at the private terminal in Nassau, from papers the handler filed in advance. On the way home there is no preclearance for private flights: US customs clears you at the FBO of the Florida airport you land at. You need a passport both ways.

Yes. Bank transfer in any major currency; crypto also accepted. Tell us your preferred coin and we confirm the network and payment instructions with the contract.
