Four airports take most of Miami's private flights, and customs hours decide as much as distance. How Opa-locka, Miami International and the two Fort Lauderdale airports compare, checked against the official sources.

Most private flights into Miami land at Opa-locka Executive, ten miles north of Downtown and the busiest private airport in South Florida. Miami International, the airline hub, is closer to Downtown and Brickell and has one private terminal; its customs is the one that works through the night.
Fort Lauderdale Executive and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood, twenty miles north, serve Fort Lauderdale and the coast up to Boca Raton, and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood takes the largest aircraft. For flights, prices and aircraft into the city, see private jet to Miami.
Customs hours matter more in Miami than anywhere else: an arrival from abroad has to land where officers are on duty, and only two of the four work through the night.
| Airport | From Downtown | Aircraft | Customs | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Opa-locka Executive Airport OPF | About 11 miles; about 35 minutes to Downtown and 30 to Miami Beach, by the county's figures | Every business jet; terminals up to Boeing Business Jets | 9 am to midnight, at the customs ramp | Miami Beach, Brickell, Bal Harbour |
| Miami International Airport MIA | About 6 miles; the closest runway to Downtown and Brickell | Smaller and midsize jets on the General Aviation Center ramp | 24 hours, at the General Aviation Center | Downtown, Brickell, late arrivals from abroad |
| Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport FXE | About 29 miles; six miles from downtown Fort Lauderdale | Most business jets; the heaviest by permission | 8 am to 11.30 pm | Fort Lauderdale, Las Olas, the beach |
| Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport FLL | About 21 miles; four miles from downtown Fort Lauderdale | Every size, including airliner conversions | 24 hours, attached to the Sheltair terminal | Large aircraft, late arrivals, the northern coast |
Distances are straight-line from Downtown; drive times are indicative and depend on the hour. Airport details checked against the official sources on 5 October 2026; procedures change, so we reconfirm them for every flight.
Opa-locka sits north of Downtown and Miami International just west of it; the two Fort Lauderdale airports are twenty miles up the coast. Lines are straight-line distances to Downtown Miami.

Opa-locka Executive, ten miles north of Downtown, is Miami's private jet airport: the busiest in Miami-Dade and seventh in the US in 2025, with 30,207 private jet departures. The county puts it 35 minutes from Downtown and 30 from Miami Beach by car, and charges no landing fees.
Five companies now run terminals here. Jet Aviation opened its new terminal fully in July 2026, with a ramp built for ultra-long-range jets, and the former Embassair terminal was bought by Brazil's JHSF in April. Customs works on the field from 9 am to midnight in its own building, not inside an FBO: aircraft taxi to the customs ramp first, and a flight landing in the last hour may be turned away.
Nights need planning. The tower closes from 11 pm to 7 am and, under FAA data from 1 October 2026, the main runway closes at the same hours unless permission is requested an hour ahead. In Art Basel week, in early December, the terminals have required reservations and charged an event fee.

Open around the clock, with more than 100,000 sq ft of hangars, and the terminal that takes aircraft up to Boeing Business Jets.
Fully open since July 2026: an 8,500 sq ft terminal, 40,000 sq ft of hangars and a ramp built for larger-cabin and ultra-long-range jets, with a private drive-on entrance.
Open around the clock, with secure ramp access for cars.
Open 24 hours, with hangar space for aircraft up to the size of a Global.

Miami International is the closest runway to Downtown and Brickell, about 6 miles away, and its private side is one FBO, Signature. Customs for private flights works around the clock at the county's General Aviation Center, which makes it the usual answer for a late arrival from abroad.
It is an airline hub first. Every arrival on the General Aviation Center ramp needs permission three hours ahead, aircraft with a wingspan over 78 ft may not use that ramp, and every jet flies a noise-abatement departure. For larger business jets we usually look at Opa-locka or Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood.
The only private terminal at Miami International, open around the clock. Customs clears passengers at the county's General Aviation Center, a separate building.

Fort Lauderdale Executive, owned by the city, is five miles north of downtown Fort Lauderdale and the private airport for Las Olas, the beach and the coast towards Boca Raton. It was twenty-fourth in the US for private jet departures in 2025, with 17,942.
Its main runway is 6,002 ft and rated for lighter aircraft, so the heaviest jets need prior permission from the airport; for those we usually use Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood. Customs works from 8 am to 11.30 pm in its own building and clears one flight at a time, with permission to land requested an hour before arrival.
The former Fort Lauderdale Executive Jet Center, bought by Signature in October 2025, open from 6 am to midnight.
Open from 6 am to 10 pm and on call outside those hours, with a hangar for aircraft up to the Global 7500 due in late 2026 or early 2027.
Fuel and ground services around the clock, every day of the year.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood is the airline airport between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, about 20 miles from Downtown Miami and South Beach and four from downtown Fort Lauderdale. Its private side has grown fast: five FBOs, and sixteenth in the US for private jet departures in 2025, the largest rise of any top-25 airport.
Customs works around the clock and, unusually for South Florida, in a building attached to an FBO, Sheltair's, so passengers clear and leave from the same place. With a 9,000 ft runway and Jetscape's airliner-sized hangars, it takes every size of business aircraft.
Open around the clock, with the customs building attached, so an arrival from abroad clears and leaves from the same terminal.
Customs on the airfield around the clock, more than 70,000 sq ft of hangars, and the only FBO here that hangars airliner-sized aircraft.
Opened in December 2024: open around the clock, 88,000 sq ft of hangars and direct ramp access.
Open around the clock, with cars allowed to the ramp side.
Customs support around the clock and hangars for aircraft up to a Gulfstream IV.
Formerly Kendall-Tamiami, 17 miles south-west of Downtown, for Coral Gables, Pinecrest and the south. A 6,000 ft runway, Signature among its FBOs, and customs from 10 am to 8 pm.
A 6,276 ft runway with Atlantic and Signature. Customs is a user-fee service from Thursday to Monday, 10.30 am to 6.30 pm, and quiet hours run from 10 pm to 7 am.
Palm Beach International was renamed President Donald J. Trump International in July 2026, code DJT. Four miles from Palm Beach island, with Atlantic, Jet Aviation and two Signature terminals, and customs from 8.30 am to 7.30 pm.
The civil airport at Homestead, with a 4,001 ft runway and no customs; the Air Reserve Base beside it is not open to charter.

Each route page has the flight time, the airports at both ends, the aircraft that suit it and an indicative price.
Teterboro to Opa-locka for most flights; Fort Lauderdale for the northern coast.
Into Opa-locka before midnight, or Miami International for a later landing.
Out of Opa-locka, about five hours to Las Vegas.
Ultra-long-range from Opa-locka or Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood, where the largest jets leave at full weight.
The jets we fly most out of Miami, and what the airports mean for each.
The hourly rate follows the aircraft, but the airport adds its own lines: handling and parking at the FBO, event fees in Art Basel week, and customs overtime outside the posted hours. The larger cost is usually positioning, if the aircraft is based at another South Florida airport. The private jet charter cost guide has the hourly rates by cabin and what moves a quote.
Range depends on the aircraft, the passengers, the winds and the routing, and Miami's long flights are long: London is about nine hours and Dubai about fourteen. The private jet range finder shows which aircraft fly your route non-stop.
Opa-locka Executive for most trips: Miami's busiest private airport, five private terminals and customs on the field from 9 am to midnight, about 30 minutes from Miami Beach by the county's figure. Miami International is closer to Downtown and better after 11 pm.
Opa-locka, unless you land from abroad late at night. It has five private terminals, room for the largest business jets and no airline traffic; Miami International has one private terminal and a ramp limited to smaller jets, but customs around the clock.
Miami International, at the General Aviation Center, and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood, in a building attached to the Sheltair terminal. Opa-locka's customs works from 9 am to midnight, Fort Lauderdale Executive's from 8 am to 11.30 pm and Miami Executive's from 10 am to 8 pm.
Fort Lauderdale Executive for most jets heading to Fort Lauderdale; Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood for the heaviest aircraft, which need permission at Executive, and for arrivals from abroad after 11.30 pm.
Mostly Opa-locka, with Miami International and the Fort Lauderdale airports taking the overflow. In 2024 the private terminals at Opa-locka and Miami International required reservations and charged an event fee for the week, so we book parking the day the flight is confirmed. The 2026 show runs from 4 to 6 December.
Opa-locka, where Fontainebleau Aviation takes aircraft up to Boeing Business Jets, or Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood, where Jetscape hangars airliner-sized aircraft. Miami International's General Aviation Center ramp does not take wingspans over 78 ft.
No. It was renamed President Donald J. Trump International in July 2026 and its code is now DJT. It is about four miles from Palm Beach island, with four private terminals and customs from 8.30 am to 7.30 pm.
