Opa-locka to Teterboro by dinner

Miami to New York is 1,090 miles, about three hours in a light jet and two and a half in a heavy jet. Both cities have aircraft of every size based on the field, so a flight north rarely needs one to position from elsewhere.

Most private flights north leave from Opa-locka, about thirty minutes from Miami Beach by the county's figure. Miami International suits Brickell and Downtown, Miami Executive the south and Coral Gables, and Fort Lauderdale Executive the coast from Las Olas to Boca Raton. At the New York end Teterboro is the usual arrival, twenty-five to forty minutes from Midtown.

The constraint on this route is the evening. Opa-locka's tower closes at 11 pm and Teterboro asks operators not to fly between 11 pm and 6 am, so a late dinner in Miami followed by a flight home means landing at Westchester before midnight or at Newark or JFK, which work through the night.

Which airport to leave from and which to land at are set out in our guides to the private jet airports in Miami and the private jet airports in New York: FBOs, customs and curfews, side by side.

Flying back to New York in the evening

Most flights on this route are the return after a weekend or a week in Miami, and most leave in the afternoon or evening. Allow two and three-quarter hours in the air and twenty minutes on the ground at each end.

Leave Opa-locka by 7.30 pm and a light jet lands at Teterboro before 10.30 pm, ahead of its voluntary quiet hours from 11 pm to 6 am. Westchester asks operators not to fly from midnight to 6.30 am, which gives about another hour. Opa-locka's tower closes from 11 pm to 7 am and, under FAA data from 1 October 2026, the main runway closes with it unless permission is requested an hour ahead, so a departure after 11 pm is usually better from Miami International.

For a later landing, Newark's private terminal and JFK's are open around the clock. We confirm the hours at both ends when we book.

Miami to New York private jet cost

The prices below are indicative one-way estimates for the whole aircraft, not per seat, from Opa-locka to Teterboro. They cover the flight itself, with the crew and the fuel, in an aircraft that is already in Miami.

Tax, airport fees and any flying without you on board come on top, and the written quote lists each one with a single total before you commit. How each figure is built, and what the quote adds, is set out under the table.

If you flew down with us, the same aircraft can wait in Miami for the return. That is priced on the parking and the crew's hotel rather than as a second one-way flight, and is usually the cheaper option for a stay of a few days.

The hourly rate for each cabin, and what moves a quote up or down, are in our guide to private jet charter costs.

How the Miami to New York prices are worked out

Each figure is the flight time for that cabin, gate to gate, multiplied by an hourly rate for an aircraft of that size based in Miami, and rounded to the nearest $500. The rate covers the aircraft, the crew and the fuel. Every rate sits inside the band for its cabin in our charter cost guide.

Federal excise tax is charged at 7.5% on charter flights within the United States, so the last column of the table shows each figure with it added.

Segment fee
A federal fee of $5.30 per passenger for each flight in 2026, so $21.20 for four people one way.
Positioning
If no suitable aircraft is in Miami on the day, or the aircraft flies back south empty after dropping you, those hours are billed at the same rate and the excise tax applies to them too.
Landing and handling
Set by each airport and private terminal, Opa-locka and Teterboro included, and by the size of the aircraft.
Waiting in New York
Parking or a hangar, and the crew's hotel, for each night the aircraft waits for a return south.
On board
Catering and Wi-Fi as ordered, and de-icing in New York if the aircraft has waited there on a winter night.

Example, not a quote: four passengers in a midsize jet, Opa-locka to Teterboro, comes to $18,000 + $1,350 excise tax + $21.20 in segment fees = $19,371.20, before landing, handling and any positioning.

When New York fills up

New York's private airports run near capacity all year. On these dates a temporary flight restriction or a slot programme can change the airport you use, so we plan them early.

  1. September United Nations General Assembly The week of the General Debate brings flight restrictions and a slot programme at Teterboro; Westchester and Newark absorb the overflow.
  2. Late August to September US Open Two weeks of inbound traffic to Westchester and Teterboro, peaking on the finals weekend.
  3. February and September Fashion Week Short, intense weeks of European arrivals; Teterboro parking is the constraint.
  4. Thanksgiving The long weekend The Wednesday before and the Sunday after are the busiest private days of the year on the East Coast.
  5. December to January Christmas and New Year Outbound to Florida, the Caribbean and the mountains peaks in the week before Christmas.
  6. Summer Fridays The Hamptons and Nantucket Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings from May to September fill the light jets and helicopters.

New York to Miami

The flight south leaves from Teterboro, Westchester, JFK or Newark for Opa-locka, Miami International or Fort Lauderdale, in about the same time. Palm Beach, about fifty miles closer to New York, is the shortest of the Florida legs.

If you plan to fly back down within a few days, ask for the aircraft to wait in New York: it is often cheaper than two separate one-way flights.
