Chicago to NYC and back in a day

Chicago to New York is 715 miles, a little under two hours eastbound in a light jet. It is one of the busiest business routes in the country, and most of our clients fly it as a day return: Midway at 6.30 am, Teterboro at about 9.25 am New York time, Midtown by ten, back in Chicago for dinner.

The time saved is on the ground. Midway's FBOs are twenty-five minutes from the Loop and you board from the car; Teterboro is twenty-five to forty minutes from Midtown with no terminal to walk through. For Greenwich, Westchester and the Upper East Side, Westchester County Airport is the closer arrival.

Bad weather in New York slows every airport, Teterboro included, and air traffic control can hold departures from Chicago on a stormy afternoon. What changes is that the aircraft waits for you, so there is no missed connection, no rebooking and no night in an airport hotel.

What the flight costs

Prices below are indicative one-way figures for the whole aircraft, not per seat. They include the flight, crew and fuel; Teterboro parking, de-icing, repositioning and handling are quoted separately once we know your dates.

A same-day return with the aircraft waiting in New York is the usual way to fly this route and is priced well below two one-way flights. For a regular weekly trip, we can quote the whole series of flights together.

Departure airports in Chicago

Chicago has four airports that suit a private departure. Midway is the closest to the Loop and handles most of them; Chicago Executive in Wheeling serves the North Shore; DuPage covers the western suburbs; O'Hare takes the VIP airliners and the long international flights.

MDW

Chicago Midway International

Best for
The Loop, River North, the Gold Coast, McCormick Place
Drive
20 to 30 min to the Loop
FBO
Signature, Atlantic Aviation

The closest airport to downtown, open around the clock. Its 6,500 ft runways take every cabin on domestic legs; a large jet leaving at maximum weight for a long international flight uses O'Hare.

PWK

Chicago Executive, Wheeling

Best for
The North Shore, Northbrook, Lake Forest
Drive
30 to 45 min to the Loop, 15 min to Winnetka
FBO
Signature, Atlantic Aviation

The North Shore's own airport, with no airline traffic and a quick turn at the FBO. Its 5,000 ft runway suits light and midsize jets; larger cabins are planned case by case.

ORD

O'Hare International

Best for
Heavy jets, VIP airliners, international arrivals
Drive
30 to 50 min to the Loop
FBO
Signature

No weight limits and full customs. Private traffic uses its own FBO on the field, away from the terminals, but taxi times are long at the airline peaks.

Arrival airports in New York

Teterboro is the usual New York arrival for anything up to an ultra-long-range jet. VIP airliners and most international customs arrivals use JFK or Newark; Westchester is the quieter option for the Upper East Side and Connecticut.

Aircraft for a two-hour shuttle

For one to four people a light jet is the sensible choice: under two hours, a lavatory, and the lowest price. A midsize cabin is worth it if you need a table to prepare a meeting or are travelling with a team. Super-midsize and heavy jets suit a board or a family with luggage for a week in the city.

When New York fills up

New York's private airports run near capacity all year. On these dates a temporary flight restriction or a slot programme can change the airport you use, so we plan them early.

  1. September United Nations General Assembly The week of the General Debate brings flight restrictions and a slot programme at Teterboro; Westchester and Newark absorb the overflow.
  2. Late August to September US Open Two weeks of inbound traffic to Westchester and Teterboro, peaking on the finals weekend.
  3. February and September Fashion Week Short, intense weeks of European arrivals; Teterboro parking is the constraint.
  4. Thanksgiving The long weekend The Wednesday before and the Sunday after are the busiest private days of the year on the East Coast.
  5. December to January Christmas and New Year Outbound to Florida, the Caribbean and the mountains peaks in the week before Christmas.
  6. Summer Fridays The Hamptons and Nantucket Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings from May to September fill the light jets and helicopters.

New York to Chicago

Westbound the flight takes about two hours fifteen, and you gain an hour on the clock. A 6 pm departure from Teterboro lands at Midway at about 7.15 pm Chicago time.

Teterboro's voluntary curfew runs from 11 pm to 6 am, so a return before 6 am leaves from Newark. Late in the day, New York's departure queues on a thunderstorm afternoon in summer are the main risk; we watch them from lunchtime and move your wheels-up time if needed.
