Chicago to LA non-stop, against the wind

Chicago to Los Angeles is 1,745 miles, flown westbound into the jet stream. A midsize or super-midsize jet does it non-stop in about four hours fifteen. A light jet usually manages it too, but on a winter day with strong headwinds and four or more aboard we plan a short fuel stop in Colorado or Nebraska rather than arrive with a thin reserve.

Los Angeles is two hours behind Chicago, so a 9 am departure from Midway lands at Van Nuys at about 11.15 am local time. Van Nuys is the arrival for Bel Air, Beverly Hills and the Westside; Burbank is closer to Hollywood and the studios; LAX suits Santa Monica, Malibu and anyone flying on overseas. For Newport Beach, John Wayne in Orange County is ten minutes from the harbour.

Large-cabin aircraft are based at both ends, so a same-day departure is usually possible. Midway's runways handle every cabin on this route; O'Hare is the choice for a large jet leaving at maximum weight on a long international leg.

What the flight costs

Prices below are indicative one-way figures for the whole aircraft, not per seat. They cover the flight, crew and fuel; parking in Los Angeles, repositioning, de-icing in winter and handling are quoted separately once we know your dates.

For a stay of a few days, it is often cheaper to release the aircraft and book the return as a separate one-way than to keep it waiting at Van Nuys. We price both and show you the difference.

Aircraft that fly four hours west without a stop

Four hours into a headwind is where the aircraft choice starts to matter. A midsize jet with real range, such as the Citation Latitude, flies it non-stop all year with a full cabin. A super-midsize gives you a wider cabin and seats that recline flat enough for a nap, which is the usual choice for a family or a working flight. Light jets are the cheapest way to fly it with two or three aboard.

Heavy and long-range jets take the route without a stop in any season.

Midsize jets

Eight or nine seats, six feet of headroom and the range to fly it non-stop in winter. Our default for this route.

02

Super-midsize jets

A wider cabin and a quieter ride for four hours. Non-stop in any season with a full cabin.

When Los Angeles fills up

Los Angeles is busiest in awards season and around the big weekends, when Van Nuys parking is the constraint.

  1. January to March Awards season Golden Globes, Grammys and the Oscars bring a wave of inbound aircraft; Van Nuys and Burbank ramps fill the day before each ceremony.
  2. 14 February 2027 Super Bowl LXI SoFi Stadium hosts the game and the whole basin fills from the Thursday. Hawthorne and LAX slots go first; the FAA runs a reservation programme at every private airport for the weekend.
  3. February Frieze Los Angeles Collectors in for the week; a quieter peak than the awards but the same airports.
  4. April Coachella Two weekends of outbound traffic to Palm Springs and Thermal, and light jets are the scarce resource.
  5. Thanksgiving The long weekend The Wednesday before and the Sunday after are the busiest private days of the autumn.
  6. December to January Christmas and New Year Outbound to Aspen, Cabo and Hawaii peaks in the week before Christmas.

Los Angeles to Chicago

Eastbound, the jet stream works for you and the flight drops to about three and a half hours. You lose the two hours on the clock, so a 1 pm departure from Van Nuys lands at Midway around 6.30 pm Chicago time.

Van Nuys bars louder jets from departing between 10 pm and 7 am, and Burbank bars noisier aircraft over the same hours. For a late flight home we plan the airport around the aircraft, and in winter we check the Chicago forecast before you leave the hotel.
