Most private flights into New York land at Teterboro, across the Hudson in New Jersey and the closest airport to Midtown. It is also the most crowded, has a weight limit that rules out jets built from airliners, and asks operators to stay quiet overnight.
Westchester County, north of the city, is the calmer alternative for Westchester and Greenwich. JFK and Newark are airline airports with one private terminal each, and they are where the largest aircraft and the late international arrivals go. For flights, prices and aircraft into the city, see private jet to New York.
Distance is only part of it. The aircraft, the hour you land and whether you are arriving from abroad usually decide the airport before the drive does.
| Airport | From Midtown | Aircraft | Customs | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Teterboro Airport TEB | About 7 miles; typically 25 to 40 minutes to Midtown by the Lincoln Tunnel or the George Washington Bridge | Up to 100,000 lb on the day: every business jet, the largest at reduced fuel | 7.30 am to 11.15 pm, at Jet Aviation or Hangar 1 | Midtown, the Upper East Side, the West Side, Wall Street |
| Westchester County Airport HPN | About 26 miles; typically 45 to 60 minutes to Midtown; minutes from Greenwich | Every business jet at full weight; airliner conversions need prior permission | 7.30 am to 11.15 pm, at Signature West, Million Air or Atlantic East | Westchester, Greenwich, Connecticut |
| JFK Airport JFK | About 14 miles; typically 45 to 60 minutes to Midtown | No limit: Boeing and Airbus business jets | 24 hours, at the general aviation terminal | VIP airliners, late arrivals, Brooklyn and Long Island |
| Newark Airport EWR | About 11 miles; typically 30 to 45 minutes to Midtown | No limit | 24 hours, on the CBP ramp beside Signature | Large aircraft, late arrivals, New Jersey, a full Teterboro |
Distances are straight-line from Midtown; drive times are indicative and depend on the hour. Airport details checked against the official sources on 5 October 2026; procedures change, so we reconfirm them for every flight.
Teterboro and Newark sit across the Hudson in New Jersey, JFK on Jamaica Bay, Westchester north of the city on the Connecticut line. Lines are straight-line distances to Midtown; the drive depends on the bridges, the tunnels and the hour.
Start with where you are going and what you are flying. These are the cases we see most.

Teterboro AirportWestchester. The drive is shorter from the north, the ramps are calmer, and customs is at the FBO.
Westchester County AirportJFK or Newark. At more than 170,000 lb a Boeing Business Jet is far over Teterboro's limit and needs prior permission at Westchester.
JFK AirportNewark or JFK. Customs at Teterboro and Westchester stops clearing arrivals at 11.15 pm; at the two airline airports it runs around the clock.
Newark AirportWestchester, Newark or JFK, where the aircraft can leave at full weight. From Teterboro it is held to 100,000 lb, which is enough for Europe but not for Tokyo.

Teterboro takes no airline flights at all, and more private jets used it in 2025 than any other airport in the United States. It is run by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, about 7 miles from Midtown in a straight line, and the drive in through the Lincoln Tunnel or over the George Washington Bridge is the shortest of the four.
The rules shape most trips. No aircraft may weigh more than 100,000 lb anywhere on the airport. That leaves out the Boeing and Airbus business jets, but not the largest Gulfstreams and Globals: a Global 7500 or a G700 can use Teterboro if the operator holds it to 100,000 lb on the day and files a weight certificate 72 hours ahead, which costs fuel and so range. A Gulfstream G650 is certified at 99,600 lb and leaves with full tanks.
Operators are asked not to fly between 11 pm and 6 am. Those quiet hours are voluntary, but the noise limits are not: an aircraft that breaks them three times in two years is barred, and the limit on runway 24 is tighter from 10 pm to 7 am. Customs clears arrivals from 7.30 am to 11.15 pm, so a later landing from abroad goes to Newark or JFK.
Three companies run five private terminals. In peak weeks the ramps fill up, and the airport has warned operators to confirm a reservation with their FBO before they fly; a customs slot does not hold a parking space. Flexjet also has a terminal here, for its own owners only.
Three terminals across the airport. West, the former Meridian terminal on Industrial Avenue, is open around the clock and boards through a jet bridge. East, on Fred Wehran Drive, advertises customs and immigration on site on limited weekday hours. South has the most hangar and ramp space, for day use. Since February 2025 Signature asks for a reservation at least six hours before arrival and charges a fee without one.
Open 24 hours on Charles A. Lindbergh Drive, on the south side of the field. It is one of the two places customs clears passengers, and the one where they walk straight out of the inspection area to the car rather than taxiing on. Nine heated hangars, with overnight space for aircraft up to a G650 or a Global 7500, which matters in winter.

Westchester County Airport sits on the state line above White Plains, about 26 miles from Midtown in a straight line and a short drive from Greenwich. It has an airline terminal, but the airlines are capped by county law at four flights and 240 passengers per half hour, and most of the traffic is private: it was the third-busiest private jet airport in the US in 2025.
There is no curfew. The county asks operators not to fly between midnight and 6.30 am, but the programme is voluntary: a federal court has barred the county from ever imposing a mandatory one. Through October 2026 the main runway is also closed on weeknights from midnight to 5.30 am.
The weight rule is looser than Teterboro's, and that is often the reason to come here. Prior permission is needed only above 120,000 lb of certified weight, so every Gulfstream, Global and Falcon can leave at full weight, while the airliner conversions have to ask first. The short crosswind runway, 11-29, is closed to landings by anything over 12,500 lb.
Five terminals from three companies, east and west of the main runway. Customs processes passengers at three of them, chosen when the operator requests permission to land.
Signature West on Tower Road is open around the clock and clears customs and immigration in the building, which makes it the usual choice for an international arrival. Signature East on Hangar Road keeps shorter hours, 6 am to 10 pm, with a large hangar.
The former Ross Aviation terminals, Atlantic since the 2022 merger. Atlantic East on Airport Road is open 24 hours and is one of the three places customs processes passengers; Atlantic West on Tower Road is open from 6 am to 10 pm.
Open around the clock on Tower Road, with hangar storage. It is one of the three FBOs where customs processes passengers, so an arrival from abroad can finish its formalities and leave from the same building.

JFK is New York's largest airline airport, and the private side is one FBO, Modern Aviation, with customs at the general aviation terminal by Hangar 18. It is the airport for the aircraft nothing else in New York takes without conditions, the Boeing and Airbus business jets, and for international arrivals at any hour, because customs at the general aviation terminal runs 24 hours a day.
The trade-off is the airline traffic. Taxi times are longer, the FAA limits scheduled flights by order until 2028, and a private flight is fitted around the airline schedule. We confirm the arrival time with the FBO and any reservation the FAA asks for when we book. The drive to Midtown is about the same as from Westchester, and shorter to Brooklyn, the Rockaways and the Hamptons by road.
The only FBO at JFK, open 24 hours on General Aviation Way. Modern Aviation took it over from Sheltair in February 2022. Customs clears passengers on its ramp by reservation, and it handles airline aircraft as well as business jets, which suits the VIP airliners that cannot use Teterboro.
EWR · KEWR · Newark Liberty International, New Jersey
Newark is the other airline airport with a private terminal: Signature, on Brewster Road, the only FBO on the field. Like JFK it has no weight limit and customs around the clock, and it is closer to Midtown and the West Side, which makes it the usual answer when Teterboro is full, closed by weather, or too small for the aircraft.
One change matters from 25 October 2026. An FAA order caps airline flights at 36 arrivals and 36 departures an hour until October 2027, and charter flights need slot approval from the FAA, first come first served. We request it when we book, and the FAA itself encourages operators to use nearby airports.
Open around the clock, with an overnight heated hangar and a large ramp, and help with customs and immigration on site. As the only private terminal at Newark, it is where the flight goes when the Teterboro terminals are full or the aircraft is too heavy for them.
New Jersey, about 23 miles west of Midtown, for Short Hills, Bernardsville and the western suburbs. Atlantic and Signature have terminals; customs is weekdays only, 10 am to 6 pm, for a fee.
Farmingdale, Long Island, for the North Shore and the drive east. Atlantic and Modern Aviation; customs from 9 am to 11 pm with 24 hours' notice, and voluntary quiet hours from 10 pm to 7 am.
Westhampton Beach, with a 9,002 ft runway, the longest on the East End, so the larger jets can reach the Hamptons. Modern Aviation and Signature; customs from 10 am to 10 pm with 24 hours' notice.
Formerly HTO. Closest to the Hamptons themselves, with a 4,255 ft runway for light jets and turboprops, one FBO and no customs. Voluntary quiet hours run from 10 pm to 7 am.

Send us your route, date and Manhattan destination. We will recommend the airport, aircraft and live charter option.
Each route page has the flight time, the airports at both ends, the aircraft that suit it and an indicative price.
Usually Teterboro to Opa-locka or Miami International; Westchester when the party lives north of the city.
Teterboro to Van Nuys for most flights; a super-midsize or larger jet makes it non-stop.
Teterboro in the evening to Farnborough or Luton for breakfast; JFK or Newark for a VIP airliner.
Into Teterboro before 11.15 pm, when customs closes; a later landing goes to Newark or JFK.
Overnight from Teterboro to Le Bourget; the largest cabins leave from JFK.
Teterboro or Westchester to Nassau; the return clears US customs at the FBO before 11.15 pm.
The jets we fly most out of New York, and what the airports mean for each.
The hourly rate is set by the aircraft, not the airport, but the airport adds its own lines: Port Authority landing fees at Teterboro, billed separately from the FBO's handling and parking, slot and reservation charges in peak weeks, and an overnight hangar in winter. The larger cost is usually positioning: an aircraft based at Teterboro and booked out of Westchester flies there empty first. The private jet charter cost guide has the hourly rates by cabin and what moves a quote.
Range depends on the aircraft, the passengers and bags, the winds and the routing, and in New York on the airport too. A Global 7500 held to 100,000 lb at Teterboro still flies about 5,650 nautical miles, but at full weight from Westchester it goes further. Westbound flights to Los Angeles fly into the jet stream and take longer than the return. The private jet range finder shows which aircraft fly your route non-stop.
Teterboro for most trips: it is the private jet airport nearest Manhattan, about 7 miles from Midtown in a straight line and typically 25 to 40 minutes by car, with five private terminals. Westchester is better for Greenwich and Westchester, and JFK or Newark for the largest aircraft or an international arrival after 11.15 pm.
Teterboro, unless the aircraft is a VIP airliner or you land from abroad after 11.15 pm. Teterboro is closer to Midtown, has five private terminals and no airline traffic; JFK has one private terminal, longer taxi times and the airline schedule to fit around, but no weight limit and customs 24 hours a day.
Teterboro for Manhattan, Westchester for Greenwich, Westchester and Connecticut. Westchester is also the answer when Teterboro's ramps are full in a peak week, and for a G700 or Global 7500 leaving at full weight, which Teterboro's 100,000 lb limit does not allow.
Yes, at a reduced weight. Teterboro allows no aircraft heavier than 100,000 lb on the day, so the operator holds the jet to that weight and files a certificate 72 hours ahead. The cost is fuel: enough for Europe, not for Asia non-stop. At full weight they leave from Westchester, Newark or JFK. A G650, certified at 99,600 lb, has no such limit.
All four. Teterboro and Westchester clear arrivals from 7.30 am to 11.15 pm, at Jet Aviation or Hangar 1 at Teterboro and at three of the FBOs at Westchester. JFK and Newark clear private flights 24 hours a day. Permission to land is requested at least two hours before the flight leaves abroad; we arrange it.
Not a mandatory one. Teterboro asks operators not to fly between 11 pm and 6 am, and Westchester between midnight and 6.30 am; both programmes are voluntary. Teterboro's noise limits are mandatory, though, and stricter late at night on one runway, so we plan late departures around them.
East Hampton is closest, but its 4,255 ft runway suits light jets and turboprops and it has no customs. Gabreski at Westhampton Beach has a 9,002 ft runway and customs with a day's notice, so larger jets and arrivals from abroad use it. Republic at Farmingdale suits the North Shore.
The FBOs require one. Signature has asked for a reservation at least six hours before arrival since February 2025, Atlantic asks for a reservation number for every arrival, and in peak weeks the airport has warned that every terminal is full. We book the FBO when the flight is confirmed.
Not by much on airport fees alone. The bigger difference is where the aircraft is based: if it is parked at Teterboro, flying from there avoids an empty positioning leg. We quote both when the choice changes the price.
