RDU to Chicago: the Research Triangle to the Loop, or the suburbs

Raleigh to Chicago is 630 miles, about an hour and three-quarters westbound in a light jet. Chicago is an hour behind, so an 8 am departure from Raleigh-Durham lands at Midway at about 8.45 am local time, early enough for a morning meeting downtown.

Where you land in Chicago depends on where the day is. Midway is twenty-five minutes from the Loop and River North. Several large life-science companies, AbbVie and Baxter among them, have their headquarters in the northern suburbs around North Chicago and Deerfield, twenty to thirty minutes from Chicago Executive. DuPage is the closer field for Oak Brook and Naperville. Either saves the drive across the city from Midway.

A day return is the usual pattern. The crew waits at the FBO while you are in meetings and you are home in Raleigh for a late dinner.

What the flight costs

Prices below are indicative one-way figures for the whole aircraft, not per seat. They include the flight, crew and fuel; de-icing in winter, parking, repositioning and handling are quoted separately once we know your dates.

A same-day return with the aircraft waiting is usually priced well below two one-way flights. Tell us your dates and we confirm the figure in writing.

Aircraft that fit the suburban airports

A light jet is enough for the distance and is the right size for Chicago Executive's 5,000 ft runway. A midsize jet gives a team of six to eight a table and room to prepare. Super-midsize and heavy jets are best routed into Midway, DuPage or O'Hare.

When Chicago fills up

Chicago is a convention city with a short, busy summer, so the ramp fills around the big shows at McCormick Place and the summer festivals on the lakefront.

  1. May The National Restaurant Association Show Four days at McCormick Place; Midway's ramp is at its busiest of the spring.
  2. Late July to early August Lollapalooza Four days in Grant Park with the hotels on Michigan Avenue full. Arrive on the Thursday if you can.
  3. October The Chicago Marathon Road closures across the Loop on the Sunday morning; plan the car to Midway around the course.
  4. Late November to early December RSNA at McCormick Place The world's largest radiology meeting, the week after Thanksgiving. Aircraft and hotel rooms go early.
  5. December The Christmas run Outbound to Florida, Aspen, Cabo and the Caribbean peaks in the week before Christmas; lake-effect snow can close Chicago Executive for an hour or two at a time.

Chicago to Raleigh

Eastbound with the tailwind, the flight back takes about an hour and a half, and you lose the hour. A 5 pm departure from Midway lands at Raleigh-Durham at about 7.30 pm.

From November to March, allow for de-icing in Chicago, which can add half an hour to a departure on a snowy afternoon. If snow threatens Chicago Executive, we move your departure to Midway or DuPage during the day rather than at the FBO door.
